Healthy Skin during the Winter Season

Winter has come to Texas in a form of  the Winter Storm warning with frozen rain and temperatures below freezing. On this Frozen day I’d like to share with you my remedies for healthy glowing skin. Be prepared for a long post!

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

The key ingredient for healthy and glowing skin is hydration. The heaters that we start to use as the temperature drops are drying the air that we breath causing dehydration to our body. While drinking more liquids (water preferably) is a no brainer, I’d recommend to use humidifiers when you turn the heater on.

Recently, I’ve purchased Essential Oil Diffuser/Humidifier from Amazon which perfectly fits the interior and can be used with essential oils to fill the room with natural scents.

Face

Since I’ve moved to Houston, my skin has become surprisingly dry, so my vanity cabinet is full of various moisturizers that I use depending on how dry the skin is.

With heaters and overall dryer air during the winter, I would recommend using thicker creams to maintain hydration.

All products are in mini size except for the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream and La Mer Eye Concentrate

My favorite moisturizing cream is Creme de la Mer from La Mer. It is the thickest face cream I have and I usually apply it as a night cream. I don’t use it every night, only when my face feels extremely dry. The moisture level remains till the next day and the skin feels very soft on the following day.

I also like the High-Potency Night-A-Mins cream from Origins. It has a silky formula and amazing citrusy smell. It also leaves the skin very conditioned and soft on a less drier nights. For oily skin, Origins has the same cream in oil-free version.

If you like masks, consider the Moisturizing Mask from Caudalie. I usually use it once a week as a part of my night skin care routine and leave it overnight replacing the night cream.  I’d recommend using such cream masks over the sheet masks in winter because it is so easy to get cold as the wet sheet mask chills on your face for 20-30 minutes.

When I’m applying make up, I use Josie Maran  100% Pure Organ Oil to nourish my skin, followed by the Whipped Argan Oil Face Butter and finishing with Surreal Skin Organ Finishing Balm that also works as a primer.

By the way, this Pure Argan Oil is super versatile, so you can also use it also for hair and nails.

If you have oily skin, you would like the Ultra Facial Cream from Kiehl’s. I think it works for every skin type and is also good for sensitive skin – tested on myself. I use it on less drier days under the makeup.

When applying products to your face, do not forget about your décolleté area.

As for the eyes, my one and only is The Eye Concentrate from La Mer. I use it twice a day to erase my dark circles and hydrate the most delicate skin under my eyes.

Lips

Flaky dry lips is a nightmare to me. Using balms sometimes is not enough, so it’s good to exfoliate your lips before applying a balm or lip makeup.

DSCF6352

I like the Pout Prep Lip Exfoliant lip scrub from Tarte, it comes in a very convenient small  size. It is very gently and moisturizing as it is enriched with maracuja and shea butter. You can also use it to remove the liquid lipstick gently from your lips.

I’ve already dedicated a separate post about my favorite lip balm from Lanolips, you can read about it and its active ingredient here in more details.

Body

Your body also needs hydrations to combat the dry air.

I’m using  Deep Comfort Body Butter from Clinique which is really a good one as it absorbs quickly into the skin. If you want something even more nourishing, go for L’Occitane Ultra Rich Body Cream enriched with Shea Butter.

Hands are another important part of the body that need to be nourished as they age really fast. My all-time favorite is Shea Butter Hand Cream from L’Occitane. It sinks into the skin quickly, bringing long-lasting comfort while not being too oily.

Do not forget to nourish your cuticles: I’m using a Cuticle Conditioner from Onsen. Its formula is also very gentle and it absorbs fast making your manicure last longer.

I’d also recommend to use the Extra-Gentle Soap from L’Occitane. This soap bar is the best one I’ve ever tried in my life, and without it I’m having extremely dry patches of skin on my hands.

For your foot I’d recommend using another product from L’Occitane – Dry Skin Foot Cream. It is also from the same Shea Butter line that as you see I’m obsessed with. Put some cream under your socks before you go to sleep to wake up with soft baby heels.

5 Beauty Products That Didn’t Work For Me And What I Use Instead

Today’s post is inspired by Mariia Cano‘s post where she shared her experience about some of the products that appeared to be not what was expected.

I’m going to start with the same intention sharing my list of not-impressed-me-at-all products as well as sharing what really works instead. So keep on reading!

1. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+

Although this CC cream is one of the Top Selling Products in Sephora this year according to Allure Magazine, I didn’t like it. Yes, it has SPF 50+ and yes it doesn’t dry out my skin, but the color selection is terrible, at least the Light shade that is closer to my complexion made me look grayish. On the days, when your face doesn’t really look healthy you turn to good foundation to add some color to your face, and this CC cream made me look even worse.

Instead, I’m using Diorskin Nude BB Creme from Dior (Shade 002) + NARS Smooth & Protect Primer SPF 50. This BB cream enhances my natural color and the primer protects my skin from sun exposure and makes the BB cream last longer.

2. Kocostar Split Ends Therapy

This is perhaps the most terrible thing I ever tried on my hair. And believe me, I tried a lot.

Apart from convenience of the package and quite easy application, this leave-in treatment  made my hair look extremely greasy and gross and I didn’t even notice if  it made my dry ends any softer.

Instead, I’m going to share with you my favorite hair mask from ESSENTIAL.

[The Face Shop] Essential Damage Care Dual Deep Treatment is also packed with all the ingredients mentioned in Split Ends Therapy but it actually works leaving my hair so silky. I use it instead of conditioner/ or after conditioner, leaving it for 3-5 minutes and then washing it off.

Alternatively, there is another DIY mask that stimulates growth and make your hair silky. I learnt it from my cousin. Here is the family recipe:

  • 2 yolks
  • 2 table spoons castor oil
  •  1 tea spoon honey

Mix all the ingredients and apply the mixture to the roots. Add coconut butter on the length of your hair. Put a plastic cap on and wrap it with a towel. You would need to keep it for 2 hours, but the final result is really worth it.
One more hack: use egg’s whites as a face mask to minimize pores: just whip the egg white and apply it to your face for 15-20 minutes.

3. SwissCo Soft Touch Oval Brush Polypin

I got this Shower Brush from Marshall’s for $4 and honestly, it doesn’t work at all! It gets stuck somewhere in the middle of the length and I hear tearing sounds (my hair screaming) as i’m trying to brush through my wet hair. Interestingly, that I neither liked using it on my dry hair. I remember my hair artist using Wet brush on my hair at the salon and it was gliding through so easily, definitely not like the one that I bought from SwissCo. So please please please, don’t even think of buying dupes, it isn’t really worth your time and your damaged hair.

Instead, get the Original Wet Brush. They come in different colors and designs so that you have a variety of handles to choose and the quality won’t be compromised.

4. PÜR  – HydraGel Lift

Dark under eye circles is one of my biggest skin issues so I’m open to experiments searching for products to improve the skin in that area and to cover it with make up. If you are just like me, you have probably noticed that when you apply makeup in that area it starts to crease really fast. So I decided to get an under eye primer to smooth the natural lines under my eye and prevent the concealer from creasing.

I tried the HydraGel Lift under eye primer after reading some good reviews online. Honestly, it neither smoothes my lines, nor hydrates the skin to prepare it for concealer. All I was feeling is some cooling effect which was even bothering me a little bit during cold season.

Instead,  the artists that was doing my makeover before the Anastasia Beverly Hills Master Class, recommended using a small amount of Make Up Forever Smoothing Primer after applying a tiny amount of moisturizer. When it comes to under eye are, you want to use only a fraction of products to avoid product build up in your lines and crease.

I got a sample at Sephora and little goes a long way! Will definitely get myself a full size next year.

5. JUICE BEAUTY – SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen

Despite the natural formula with organic ingredients, I didn’t like the smell and the thickness of the formula that doesn’t really moisturize the skin, but make it very sticky. My husband didn’t like the smell either saying “it’s disgusting” every time I was applying it.

Instead, I really liked the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion. The best part of it is that it provides broad spectrum protection SPF 50+ and can be used on face and body.

Luckily, here in US, stores like Sephora and Ulta have a customer-friendly return policy which actually keeps me less disappointed when the products does not work for me and doesn’t stop me from experimenting with new products.

What product was your biggest disappointment this year? Let me know in the comments down below!

Best Soothing Lotion for Sensitive Skin

After the poll in my instagram account, I decided to make series about my skin care routine.

Today’s post is dedicated to the Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Soothing Treatment Lotion by Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins.  I was surprised by the effect of this lotion, so I decided to make a separate post about this magical product.

sunkissedblush_origins-lotion (1 of 1)-2 copy.jpg

I have a sensitive skin, especially on my forehead after I get my brows shaped. I cannot get my eyebrows threaded or waxed because I get such a bad irritation that turns into acne and it heals up only by the time I need to groom my eyebrows again. The skin also gets irritated after tweezing, but I found a solution by  applying anti-acne product that calms my skin and prevents from acne.

For years, I have been using Clinique Anti-Blemish ( known as in the EU or Acne Solutions in the USA) Clarifying Lotion for the whole face (as a teenager) and later on only on my forehead after tweezing. I found this product really good because of its active ingredient –  Salicylic Acid. I remember I even panicked if I could forget to take it with me for my brow appointment.

Couple of months ago I’ve been at my regular browbar appointment and suddenly I realized that I didn’t take my Clinique lotion with me and they didn’t carry it in that particular store. I asked for a skin soothing lotion and I was introduced to this green bottle.

sunkissedblush_origins-lotion (1 of 1)-3

I applied it on my forehead right after the tweezing and on the next day I was amazed by the effect that my skin wasn’t irritated, red or covered with small pimples. At the same time, the skin wasn’t over-dried as it usually happened with Clinique.

On my next visit to the store I’ve check the ingredient list – 2/3 of it are the natural extracts and essential oils with the main ingredient  –  reishi mushroom extract.

This so-called “Mushroom of Immortality” is grown in China and is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This mushroom is known for promoting longevity, as well as for its healing and soothing properties, which are especially good for calming the sensitive skin.

The lotion has a very nice fragrance, which reminds me of the aromatherapy at Spa’s.  I bought it right away and now it’s a part of my day and night time skin care routine. Indeed, it calms the skin, reduce the redness and is quite moisturizing. Bye-bye dry irritated skin!
