All the skincare lovers have probably heard all the buzz about silk pillowcases. In this post we will discuss why you might want to switch to silk bedding and review one of the most awarded silk pillowcases – Slip silk pillowcase.
Why is silk pillowcase a better choice?
If you love your night skincare routine, you might have noticed that half of your expensive serums, moisturizers, and oils are being absorbed in your cotton pillowcases. Also, your sleeping position, such as sleeping on your sides or stomach, can leave creasing on your face overnight. In addition to this, split ends can also be caused by friction during sleep. No surprise, you are waking up with tangled hair and a bed head. Here is when the silk pillowcases come into play.

For centuries, women in Asia prefer silk bedding for sleep, and many beauty lovers are turning to silk pillowcases today. Why? Because silk fibers don’t wick the moisture away from your face or hair compared to cotton. Silk also produces less friction to hair, meaning there is less hair damage. Also, compared to cotton standard pillowcases, silk pillowcases will leave your hair less frizzy, because silk is a natural anti-static fabric. Finally, mulberry silk, which is considered the highest quality type of silk, is 100% Natural, Odorless and Hypoallergenic.

Even though silk is more expensive than cotton, more and more people are considering investing in silk pillowcases. Apart from the price, another drawback of silk fabric is that it is very delicate and requires extra care.
What makes Slip Silk pillowcase so special?
When I started shopping for silk pillowcases, cleaning method was my biggest concern as from my experience with silk garment, everything in silk is usually Dry Clean only. Fortunately, I discovered Slip- a brand that specializes in pure silk beauty accessories, made of “washing machine”-friendly high grade longfiber mulberry silk. interestingly, it took Slip over 10 years to develop and refine the fabric to reach ultimate combination of shine, thickness, softness and durability without loosing the luxurious feel and look of the silk fabric.

Slip takes quality standards pretty high: they use the highest grade (6A) long fiber mulberry silk, with a guaranteed thickness of 22 momme and non-toxic dyes, that meet international Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 requirements. In addition to this, Slip also did a lab study and found out that “Slipsilk™ was shown to reduce friction for skin and hair by 43%* on average“, compared to cotton pillowcases with a 220-360 thread count. Slip silk products are considered to be anti-age, anti-sleep crease anti-frizz and anti-bed head, so you can “wake up like this…flawless“.
How these pillowcase feel?
Slip silk pillowcases are as luxurious as they look. They are very delicate yet durable fabric, it is pretty slippery – as you see from the name. You can tell the difference right away (Slip pillowcases work!). It takes some time to adjust to silk pillows, but once you adapt to this slipperiness, you will never look back!

Pillowcases from Slip are available with two closures, envelope closure and zippered. I prefer zipper on my pillowcases and on my Slip pillowcase the zipper is hidden on a side so you can use both sides of the pillowcase. The monogrammed brand logo on a corner doesn’t get in a way so I switch my pillows around to wash them less often.

Slip Silk Pillowcase sizes and color options
Slip pillowcases are available in two sizes – Queen/Standard International (20” x 30” (51cm x 76cm)) and King 20″ x 36″ (51cm x 91cm)), and each size in available with both types of closures. These silk pillowcases also used to come in Euro size (25″x25″(65cm x65 cm)) with zipper closure and 40x80cm oblong size. Slip Silk Pillowcases are sold in 15 different shades including bold and pastel colors. You can also find sets with two pillowcase during Nordstrom Anniversary event. Quick hint: these sets are still available at Nordstrom.

How to Clean Slip silk pillowcases
How to wash Slip Pillowcase?
Since it is made of silk fiber, even durable one, the best method to clean Slip pillowcase is hand wash. However, if you don’t have time to do it (well, I don’t!), just put it in a washer! I’d recommend closing the zipper (if you have zippered closure) and putting the pillowcase in a laundry mesh for extra care. Use cold water, 86F or 30C to wash your silk pillowcases by hands or in the washer on delicate setting.
What detergent to use with Slip pillowcases?
You can use any gentle pH-neutral liquid detergent or silk soap. I personally use Slip Gentle Silk Wash – a hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, non-Sensitizing and biodegradable silk shampoo formulated by the brand. With this silk wash, you only need 30ml per wash cycle. Don’t combine loads with other laundry.

List of Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Laureth-7, Sodium Methyl-2 Sulfolaurate, Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Potassium Cocoate, Sodium Propionate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate.
How to dry Slip pillowcase?
Because of the delicate nature of the silk fiber, line drying in shade is the best with silk pillowcases, including for those from Slip. Silk fabric don’t do well with dryers, so do not tumble dry. You can surely iron and steam your Slip pillowcases, but use low heat setting. I prefer to iron my pillowcases before they dry completely. It brings softness back to the fabric.
Can I dry clean Slip pillowcase?
Absolutely! Slip pillowcases are dry-cleanable. Any dry cleaning solvent other than trichloroethylene may be safely used on slip silk pillowcases.
Pricing and Sales for Slip pillowcases
Slip pillowcase is a beauty investment and yes, it comes at a premium price. The price for one Queen size pillow is $89, and $100 for King size. is However, you can buy Slip pillowcases on quarterly sales at Sephora as well as during Nordstrom Anniversary Sales when you can a get a duo value set in White(King, Queen) or Caramel. Follow my instagram account to stay in the know of latest sales and specials.

My experience with Slip silk pillowcases
Four years ago I got myself a set of two Queen size pillowcases in Caramel with zipper closure during Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they still look and feel like new! I change them every 4 days (rotating it around nightly) and wash them separately from other loads, following cleaning instruction as mentioned in this post.

Apart from luxurious feeling, these pillowcases helped me preventing hair breakage and waking up with no bed wrinkles on my face. I don’t find them hotter than regular cotton pillows, and because I loved them so much, I got another set in White a year later. Frankly, I love their quality so much that I didn’t even bother looking for alternatives.
Machine washing silk is a game-changer for me. I stained my silk pillowcases once with makeup left overnight (well, things happen), and Slip Gentle Silk Wash washed them off in a washer on cold, gentle cycle in a mesh.

Here is a picture with a brand new Slip pillowcase in White (on the left) and the Caramel one I used for a year or so (on the right) side by side. Even though it might seem that the luster has faded, it is still there. Also, we need to consider that the old pillowcase wasn’t steamed or ironed well in that photo. I find steaming or ironing causing fabrics to soften. Overall, the pillowcases retain luster and softness after years of use with proper care.

So if you ask me if Slip pillowcases is worth it, my answer is yes!
With that being said, Slip Silk Pillowcase is a must-have for every beauty lover and is #SunKissedBlush_Approved. Slip pillowcase makes a perfect gift for someone special or for yourself.
