Lanolips 101 Ointment Multi-Balm Review

What is Lanolips 101 Ointment?

If someone ever asked me what is a beauty product I can’t really live without, this is definitely the lip balm from Lanolips. Made in Australia, it is super natural, WITHOUT artificial colors, fragrances, paragons, petrolatum (!), PEG’s, mineral oils and sulfates.

It is super hydrating and nourishing and also can be used for dry skin patches, cuticles, nasal passages and as the packaging says for more! My favorites are in Strawberry and in Peach.

Ingredients:

100% Natural: Lanolin, Flavour (Aroma), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Fruit Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Super natural, super hydrating  – what can be better for a lip balm?

But wait.. what is Lanolin?

Lanolin – is a natural substance produced by the sebaceous glands of sheep. Its main purpose is to protect sheep wool from water. Since it resembles human’s sebum, it creates a protective layer on the skin that locks the moist and keep the skin nourished and hydrated. According to Lanolips, it is considered as “most skin-compatible ingredient“.

This yellow, waxy substance has been used by humans for thousands of years. The first evidence of its application comes from Ancient Egypt, where ancestors used to apply lanolin instead of moisturizer.

Lanolin today has a wide application across manufacturing in healthcare and beauty products as a natural ingredient to produce a number of products from lip balms, to ointments for dermatitis.

The dispute in the media

Lately, there has been a huge dispute as the sheep fleece is contaminated by the pesticides since most of the animals are sprayed with pesticides to kill mites and pests. These toxins are absorbed into the sheep wax and remain present in the lanolin. Although lanolin is not a carcinogen, pesticides in its composition if in big amounts can potentially lead to cancer.

However, it is important to mention that the amount of pesticide is usually very small. Moreover,  today’s cleansing processes can purify crude lanolin from residual pesticide chemicals. For example, the Lanolips brand proudly declares that they are using lanolin grade higher than the medical grade, producing hypoallergenic, safe for new-born babies product.

It is also cruelty-free, as it is extracted after the sheep is shorn so that no animal is harmed during the extraction!

Lanolips sounds like a sustainable and ethical manufacturer to me, so I feel pretty confident in the product I’m using.

In the UK I found it at Whole Foods Market, in the USA you can find them at ULTA Beauty.

My question for this is that even though you say its cruelty free because its harvested after the sheep are shorn, isn’t she process of shearing a sheep abuse? A lot of the time, the sheep are harmed when they are being sheared, creating open wounds which get infected.

That’s a good question, Cat! I believe if the company claims that their process is cruelty-free, no animal is harmed or wounded. Moreover, if the animal is not sheared annually their fleece may become too soiled that can lead to overheating of the animal.
